Podium Sounds Speaker

Shelley Katz holds BMus and MMus in Piano Performance from the prestigious Julliard School, and a PhD in the
research area of Cognition of Expression in Music from the University of Surrey. He also fulfills duties as one of
two Musicians in Residence at the ISC - Queen’s University.

Designed by Shelley Katz, Podium loudspeakers are quite literally a world first: a full-range panel loudspeaker
system. Using transverse waves induced by a tapered line-array to propagate sound through a floating panel,
all of which is designed and built in Cambridge UK. Our designs have no ribbons (even though we love ribbons),
no electrostatic devices
(even though we love those too), no cone drivers, no sub woofers and no crossover.

The Review

This review first appeared in the January 2007 issue of fairaudio.de and can be read in its original German version here.

The Podium 1 Speaker - Is it the Future of Stereo Speakers? January 21, 2008

Q and A

Q: Are the Podium Loudspeakers really handmade in the UK?
A: Every Podium Loudspeaker is hand-made from start to finish in the UK at the Podium Factory. Before a loudspeaker
can leave the factory it is inspected several times and tested to ensure it is perfect. Finally no speaker leaves without being
tested by the most sophisticated piece of equipment in the world – human ears!

Q: Do Podium speakers use electrostatic technology?
A: No, Podium’s do not use electrostatic, ribbon or drive unit technology. They use a secret and every special flat panel
technology that is unique to Podium.

Q: Are Podium Loudspeakers easy to drive?
A: Extremely! Unusual for panel loudspeakers we know! Sensitivity is between 91-93dB (4-8ohmn load) subject to the model.

WARNING! You need to use very little volume on your pre / amplifier to obtain very high sound volumes from the Podium's, so please take care with that volume control initially!

Q: Can I use a Valve Amplifier with Podium Loudspeakers?
A: Yes you can! Again the volume levels available will be subject to your amplifiers current delivery and the size of your listening room.

Q: Are Podium speakers easy to place in a room?
A: Very easy! Podium 1 and .5 Podium loudspeakers need very little distance from side walls, and when positioning from
a rear wall, you only need to allow for the length of the rear spike. Podium’s even work well near corners and you will receive very little bass lift.

Q: Do the Podium have a sweet spot like most electrostatic speakers?
A: Good question! Good news – No. No matter where you are sitting in the listening room, Podium loudspeakers image beautifully.

Q: Podium loudspeakers are flat panel so can they really do deep bass?
A: Another question we are asked a lot. Interestingly most people seem to all have a different idea of what bass is and should
sound like. We have had customers who have heard the Podium and complained of to much bass! The Podium  would not
shake the room or the floorboards - if you want this, then there are plenty of box speakers on the market to do that. If however,
you want your music accurately reproduced and true to the original, spend some time with the Podium!

For those of you who already share a love of what flat panel loudspeakers can do, just wait until you hear a Podium!
A flat panel has never sounded this good!
